True Summer's hair might be dark blonde, grey or various shades of medium brown but it always has a cool, ashy tone with absolutely no warmth.

If kept purely cool and light, blondes are really flattering.

If you want to change your natural hair, irrespective of colour, you should have a smoky or powdery finish rather than glossy. Also make sure to go up to 2 shades ligther near the roots and up to 4 shades ligther if you are doing highlights, ombre or balayage style.

Cool greys, whether natural or otherwise, are very youthful on this season.

Accessories

  1. Metals

Because your natural colouring is very cool, you want to repeat that in your accessories. The best metals for True Summer are silver, white gold and platinum. Brushed and satin metals are especially flattering.

Yellow gold is very warm will look disharmonious against your skin. Also stay away from other metals that contain a lot of yellow, such as copper.

Natural gemstones such as Blue Topaz, Lapis, Blue Labradorite and Amethyst are perfect examples that flatter your natural appearance.

Pearls are another great option. But look for ones with complex colouring, those in which different values are combined – from light to medium-dark. Avoid snow-white pearls.

  1. Sunglasses

Like everything else, cool summer eyewear needs to be cool and light. Metals are best when brushed, powdered or matte. Transparent or semi-transparent materials work really well.

Avoid black as it can be too harsh on your soft colouring. Also try to keep shine to a minimum and avoid anything reflective.

Make-up

To achieve a harmonious look, you should mimic your natural characteristics and your natural contrast with your make-up. If you want more info on true summer's features and contrast levels, click here.

  1. Foundation and concealer

If you are a true summer, your primary colour aspect is your cool undertone (hue), and your secondary aspect is the softness of your features (low chroma).

There is no easy way to find your perfect foundation, it really is a matter of trial and error.

However, you should always select foundations and concealers with cool undertones (pinkish look). A matte appearance is ideal for you, so products are best when they are matte, smooth and silky.

Avoid peachy foundations with warm undertones that will clash with your naturally cool complexion. If you’re new to all of this, I highly recommend you try the makeup on in-person.

Cool Summer Foundations and Concealers

Lots of brands have “W, N, NW, NC, C” on the label, which makes easier to match your undertone.

Its worth mentioning that MAC uses a different method, and it’s the opposite of other brands: A person with warm undertone would be suited well to an NC foundation whereas a person with cool undertones would be better suited to an NW foundation. A person with a beige undertone (neutral) would be perfectly suited to an N foundation.

  1. Bronzer & Highlighter

Bronzer is supposed to bring out the warmth in the skin. Highlighter brings out all the shine and brightness.

These are the opposite of a True Summer' beauty. There is no warmth in your undertone and your secondary characteristic is the softness of your skin, so bronzer and highlighters don’t really flatter you.

Good news, you don’t need to spend money with it!

  1. Eyeshadows

Your neutral eyeshadows are the off-whites, greys and taupes on the colour palette. For highlight eyeshadow colours, opt for the pinks, plums, blues and greens on your palette.

When selecting eyeshadows, opt for a matte finish or a slight shimmer and make sure that the colours are cool.

Avoid warm eyeshadow colours that will clash with your cool undertone. The same goes for glitter and sparkly looks, which will clash with your soft features.

  1. Blushes

Blush colours are inspired by the pinks and plums of the colour palette. These colours are cool and muted and will give you a fresh-faced appearance.

Avoid overly bright and warm colours - such as oranges, peaches and reds, as well as any sparkly blushes. Choose a matte finish or a very slight shimmer.

But again, trying these colours on in person will be an essential learning curve. Some colours to shoot for are soft mauve, orchid mauve, watered-down pink, dusty rose, lilac, and a cool plum.

  1. Mascara and Eyeliner

Eyeliner and mascara are the darker shades from your palette. You wont regret investing on greys instead of black. Once you try the slightly softer colours instead of black you’ll be amazed at how much more harmonious and gentle it can be with your colouring.

As an eyeliner, you can use any colour from your palette and, if you want to bring out your eyes, choose an eyeliner in a similar colour.

  1. Lipsticks

True Summer lipsticks are cool-based pinks and plums.

For a harmonious look, choose a matte or shiny finish, as sparkle or gloss can be too much on you. Avoid overly bright and warm colours - such as oranges and red.

The level of intensity you will be aiming for should match your contrast level. This will ensure balance and that your lip colour won’t pull focus.

This can also dependend on the purpose of the makeup; if you want to look balanced and harmonious, repeat your contrast level. If you want a dramatic effect and an impactful look, going a few shades darker will do the trick.
